Two years ago, I featured the Gemini PDA, effectively a Psion pocket computer for the 21st century. The project of London academic Dr Janko Mrsic-Flogel, it was the product I’d long been hoping for, a Psion with the brilliant pocket-sized keyboard developed in the 1990s – but with a colour screen and internet.
I doubted the Gemini would take off, but a few months later saw the crowd around Mrsic-Flogel’s stand at the Consumer Electronics Show and realised it very much had. Now the good doc’s company Planet Computers has a fantastic update, the Cosmo Communicator, which is equal parts phone and PC – with a backlit keyboard, 24MP camera and dual-SIM capability. Its looks wouldn’t make Sir Jonathan Ive sweat. But as a laptop and phone rolled into one – a Land Rover Defender of gadgets – it’s unique.
