The chill of the winter months serves as a good excuse for taking an extra dram – a fact that blended whisky maker Royal Salute hopes to capitalise on with the release of its new Snow Polo limited edition.
Only available for a limited time, it’s the first blended grain whisky to emerge from the Strathisla distillery on Scotland’s Speyside (the oldest in the Highlands) and packs an alcohol-by-volume index of 46.5, putting it in the single-malt ballpark.
Developed by the distillery’s master blender Sandy Hyslop, the Snow Polo edition has a markedly sweet flavour that’s complemented by a rich texture and overtones of toffee, honey and vanilla that make it a truly festive tipple.
Royal Salute’s long-standing association with polo includes its sponsorship of 15 major tournaments around the globe, the adoption of former England team captain Malcolm Borwick as its ambassador and the creation of two previous polo-related bottlings – the original Polo Edition of 2017 and last year’s Beach Polo offering.
This edition takes the connection a step further by celebrating the occasions when the sport is played in wintry conditions, such as at the St Regis Snow Polo World Championships – held at Aspen Valley Polo Club and nearby Rio Grande Park from December 18 to 21, during which time the new whisky will be officially unveiled.
To mark out the 21-year-old as being extra special, it is supplied in a hand-crafted porcelain bottle (priced around £120 for 70cl from the brand’s website) featuring a relief of two polo players thundering down a field in pursuit of the elusive ball.
